Irving Penn (1917-2009)

One of the greatest photographers the world will ever know has passed away at the age of 92. Irving Penn was best known for his commercial work and fine art photography which helped shape almost every aspect of modern advertising photography used today. He was one of the greatest portrait photographers the world has ever seen, his mastery of photography is revered the same way the creations of Da Vinci and the masters of the renascence are admired. His portrait of artist Pablo Picasso above is considered to be one of the greatest works of art from the past century.

Longwerks is moving! We are making the move from Atlanta to Knoxville, TN. We will still be servicing Atlanta, so don’t anyone worry about that. Not much will change as far as our service area goes, we will just be opening up more opportunities to Knoxville clientele!

We both lived in the Knoxville area through college (where we met!). Plus Rachel is from Knoxville and we both have family in Knoxville, Chattanooga, and North Carolina so its just a natural step. We are really excited.

Another rain day. The weather decided that UT Gardens was not a good location for Vicki & Patrick. They easily made adjustments and everyone had a blast! We started off at the Marriott on Summit Hill where everyone prepared and we got alot of photography accomplished. Then on to the ceremony (adjusted to the reception location) and straight into the reception. Everyone was so sweet and so much fun! Congratulations Vicki & Patrick!!

Though everything wasn’t perfect – rain and a cake catastrophe, Jennifer & Andrew took it in stride on their wedding day. The evening was elegant and everyone really enjoyed spending the day with friends and family.

The article is about the best 25 places to move in America and the beautiful city of Sandy Springs ranked in at an impressive number 15! Unfortunately the the top 1/3 of the photo seems to have been cropped off but we are glad to be a part of the story!

Sorry we’ve been a little bit inactive on the blog lately. We’ve been very busy with weddings this spring/summer. We have tons of photos from weddings just waiting to be posted when we find the time.

I would like to update with an announcement that we won’t be going to the GA Bridal Show on August 2nd. It just isn’t fitting in our schedule this year. If anyone was looking forward to seeing us there, please give us a call and we can set up a personal meeting with you. Thanks!

Our Workflow Process

We always get a lot of questions from clients about what we do when we edit photos and how much time and work goes into the final product. Here is a little story that should help to illustrate some of the things we do to produce our photos. Nicole and Terrence had a very cool location for us to shoot their wedding at and we were so excited to be working with them again. We normally try to allow for at least 30 minutes of photos with the bride and groom after the ceremony but with weddings you never know what will happen. The wedding was running about 30 minutes behind by the time we got ready to shoot their couple photos and the wedding coordinator informed us we only had about 5 minutes to get the shot! We had already scouted the location and measured the light in the room a few days before but when we arrived in the room at the wedding the lighting was very different and much darker. The room was so dark we had to use a flashlight to make our camera focus! Talk about worst case scenario! We ended up shooting a very abbreviated session with them using a single off camera flash and some educated guessing resulting in the unedited image you see below:

When it came time to edit the images of their wedding I knew I wanted the image of them to be a panoramic and I knew it needed to be re-adjusted to where the focus would be on the couple not the distracting elements in the room. The problem was the photo was obviously not a panoramic and it did not look like it could be turned into one. I remembered the photos we shot a few days before when we went to look at the location and decided to use a few of those to make the image I wanted. So the final image you see is made from a composite of 6 photos and some careful editing of the original image. Obviously I have versions of the photo without the text and decorations I just decided to use this image to illustrate the final product.

Nicole & Terrence Wedding

We had so much fun shooting Nicole and Terrence’s engagement photos a few months ago that we could hardly wait for the wedding. The wedding had a very cool butterflies and dinosaurs theme since it was being held at the Fernbank Natural History Museum as you can see below (Yeah, that’s a dinosaur!). The reception was great, jazz music filled the air and the dance floor was never empty. Congratulations!
